How Our EXR Compression Works

We re-encode the EXR with a more efficient internal compression scheme. At high quality we use PIZ, a lossless wavelet codec that works well on natural and rendered imagery and is widely supported. At lower quality we use B44A, a lossy scheme that gives a fixed ~50% reduction with maximum compatibility (it opens reliably across OpenEXR tools and viewers). Both keep the HDR float channels and the .exr format intact. Powered by OpenImageIO (oiiotool).

Frequently Asked Questions About EXR Compression

How do I compress EXR images online?
Drag your EXR onto PicEditLab and our server re-compresses it automatically, then you download the smaller file. At high quality we use lossless PIZ; at lower quality we use B44A for a fixed ~50% reduction. Both keep the HDR float data and the .exr format. Free, no registration.
Will compressing EXR reduce image quality?
PicEditLab uses a lossless compression algorithm that achieves significant size reduction while preserving visual quality. The difference is imperceptible to the human eye.
Are my files safe and private?
Yes. All files are transmitted via HTTPS encryption. We never view or analyze your image content. Files are permanently auto-deleted within 1 hour after processing, or you can delete them manually at any time.
Can I compress multiple images at once?
Absolutely. You can upload up to 3 images in a single session, with a total size limit of 300MB. After compression, download them all in one ZIP file.
Do I need to create an account?
No account or registration is required. Just open PicEditLab in your browser and start compressing immediately. It's permanently free with no hidden fees.
Besides EXR, what other formats are supported?
PicEditLab supports JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, BMP, TIFF, SVG, AVIF, GIF, PSD and 13+ more mainstream image formats, covering all everyday image processing needs.
How much can compression reduce file size?
Actual compression depends on the source image content and format. Typically, EXR files can be reduced by 60%–85%. Results may vary, but our algorithm always finds the optimal balance between size and quality.

What Is OpenEXR and Why Compress It?

OpenEXR (.exr) is the high-dynamic-range, floating-point image format created by Industrial Light & Magic and used throughout VFX, 3D rendering and compositing. Because each channel stores full float data, renders and multi-layer EXRs become very large. Compressing an EXR reduces its size while preserving the HDR float values your pipeline depends on.

Why Should You Compress EXR Files?

As web content becomes richer, image file sizes have an increasingly significant impact on page performance. Oversized, unoptimized images slow down page loading, directly affecting search engine rankings (SEO) and user retention.

  • 📌 Faster Page Load Speed: Smaller images load faster, improving Core Web Vitals scores and SEO rankings.
  • 📌 Lower Storage & Bandwidth Costs: Reduced file sizes cut server storage and CDN traffic expenses.
  • 📌 Better Mobile Experience: Smaller files load more smoothly on mobile networks, reducing user wait time.
  • 📌 Easier Sharing & Transfer: Smaller files are easier to share on social platforms and messaging apps.

How to Compress EXR Online for Free?

Using PicEditLabs online EXR compressor is a 3-step process: (1) Upload your EXR file (drag & drop supported); (2) Wait for the system to complete lossless compression automatically; (3) Click download. No software to install, no account to create, completely free, works on any device.

EXR Compression Tips & Tricks

  • Use lossless mode: Achieve the best balance between visual quality and file size reduction.
  • Batch compress: Upload multiple images at once to save time and boost efficiency.
  • Preview before downloading: Compare original and compressed images to confirm the result meets your expectations.
  • Consider WebP format: If your platform supports it, converting to WebP can achieve even higher compression ratios.
