Frequently asked questions about flipping and rotating images

How do I flip an image horizontally?
Add your image, then click Flip horizontally. That mirrors the photo left-to-right, which is what you want for a selfie that came out reversed. Flip vertically mirrors it top-to-bottom instead.
What is the difference between flipping and rotating?
Flipping mirrors the image, so text in the photo reads backwards. Rotating turns it, so text stays readable but sits on its side. If a photo came out sideways you want rotate; if it came out mirrored you want flip.
Can I flip or rotate several images at once?
Yes. Drop in up to 100 images and the transform applies to every selected one. You can also narrow the selection to just the portrait or just the landscape shots, which is usually what you need after a phone dump.
Does rotating reduce image quality?
A 90° or 180° turn only moves pixels around, so nothing is resampled and no detail is lost. Any other angle has to resample, and it also enlarges the canvas to fit the corners — use the quarter turns whenever they will do.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. Each image is drawn onto a canvas inside your own browser and transformed there. Nothing is sent to us, which is also why a large batch does not take any longer than a small one.
Which formats can I flip or rotate?
Anything your browser can decode — in practice JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and AVIF. You can keep the original format or export everything as JPG, PNG or WebP. Note that an animated GIF or WebP is flattened to its first frame.
Why does my selfie look mirrored, and how do I fix it?
Front cameras show a mirrored preview so it feels like a mirror, and some phones save that mirrored version. Flip horizontally once and text in the shot becomes readable again.
How do I rotate an image 90 degrees online?
Drop the file in and press the 90° button once for a quarter turn, twice for 180°. It works on a whole batch at once, and quarter turns are lossless, so a JPG rotated this way loses nothing.

Flip, mirror or rotate — which one do you need?

The three are easy to mix up, and picking the wrong one is why a photo comes out backwards instead of upright. Here is what each does and when you actually want it.

  • Flip horizontally (mirror) — swaps left and right. This is the fix for a selfie that came out reversed, because most front cameras show you a mirrored preview and some save it that way. It is also how you make a pair of images face each other.
  • Flip vertically — swaps top and bottom. Rarely what you want for a normal photo; it is mainly for reflections, and for scans fed into the scanner the wrong way up.
  • Rotate 90° — turns a photo from landscape to portrait or back. This is the fix for a picture that shows up sideways after being copied off a phone, which happens when an app ignores the orientation tag in the file.
  • Any angle — for straightening a crooked horizon or a scanned document that went in at a slight tilt. A degree or two is usually all it takes.

Why quarter turns are safe and odd angles are not

Flips and 90° turns just move existing pixels to new positions, so the result is identical to the original, pixel for pixel. Any other angle has to invent pixels that were never there — the grid no longer lines up — so edges soften slightly and the canvas grows to fit the tilted frame. If you only need the picture upright, stay on the quarter turns.
