Almost every image reaches 200KB, so the question on this page is not whether you will hit the target. It is how much quality you get to keep on the way there.
Because 200KB is comfortably reachable for even a large photograph, the search stops at the first quality setting that fits rather than continuing downward. A photo that could have fit at 190KB is not pushed to 120KB just because it could be. Files already under 200KB are left alone entirely — re-encoding them would only lose quality for no gain in size.
This is the opposite of the 20KB page. There the constraint is what is physically possible; here the constraint is not wasting quality you did not have to spend.

200KB is the limit you meet when the system on the other end cares about bandwidth but not desperately. Marketplaces, mail servers and content management systems land here often. It is roomy enough that a detailed photograph keeps its texture, which is not true at 50KB.
If nothing is forcing a number on you and the image is going on a web page, 200KB is a defensible budget for a large photograph and 100KB is better for everything else. If the image is going into an email, 200KB each lets you attach several without hitting a mailbox limit.
We do not resize your image and we do not convert it to a different format. The target is reached by binary-searching the encoder quality: we encode, measure, adjust and encode again until the result lands just under your number. Because this runs server-side with the real encoders (pngquant, cwebp, gifsicle, libjpeg) rather than a browser canvas, it keeps searching further down than an in-browser tool can before giving up. Target mode is available for JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, HEIC, JXL, JP2 and JXR; other formats fall back to standard quality-based compression.
