APNG vs GIF: same animation, far better picture

APNG stores each frame as a full PNG, so an animation keeps millions of colours and a real alpha channel. GIF is capped at 256 colours per frame and its transparency is a single on/off bit, which is what produces the jagged halo you see around a GIF pasted onto a coloured background. PicEditLab encodes APNG with ffmpeg and sets the animation to loop forever, matching how a GIF behaves by default.

Best for gradients, soft shadows, screen recordings and anything that has to sit cleanly on a background — Discord and Telegram both accept APNG for animated emoji and stickers.

APNG files are usually larger than the GIF they came from, because nothing is being quantised away. Older software may show only the first frame; every current browser plays the animation. The download is named .png on purpose — that is the extension the APNG spec uses, and Discord and Telegram reject a file ending in .apng.

Frequently Asked Questions — Image Format Conversion

Will converting reduce image quality?
Conversion quality depends mostly on the target format. Lossless targets (PNG, TIFF) preserve every pixel exactly. Lossy targets (JPG, WebP, AVIF) are encoded at 85–90% quality, which is visually almost indistinguishable from the original.
Is -to-APNG conversion done in my browser or on the server?
Conversion runs entirely on our server using industry-standard tools — ImageMagick, libheif, libavif, libjxl, OpenJPEG and others. Server-side conversion is not limited by what your browser can decode, so it can handle formats your browser cannot read (RAW, HEIC, AVIF, JPEG XL) and consistently delivers higher output quality.
Are my uploaded images kept on the server?
No. Files are transferred over HTTPS, used only for the current conversion, and automatically deleted 1 hour after upload. We never access, analyze, share or train on your files.
How many images can I convert at once?
Up to 30 images per batch, with a total size limit of 200 MB. For larger jobs, simply run multiple batches — there is no daily limit and no usage cap.
Is EXIF metadata kept after conversion?
By default, we keep metadata that can be carried across formats. For files converted from RAW, capture parameters, color space and ICC profiles are migrated when possible. If you need to strip metadata, use a dedicated metadata removal tool afterward.
Is this converter free? Do I need an account?
Yes, it is completely free, and no. There is no signup, no email, no daily quota and no cap on how many times you can run it. Converted files carry no watermark and are not resized or degraded in any way, and you can convert up to 30 files in a single batch and get them back as one ZIP.

Why Convert to APNG

APNG is one of the most useful target formats for everyday image work. Choosing APNG as your output usually comes down to one of three reasons: compatibility (it opens on every device and platform), file size (it compresses better than the source for your use case), or specific feature support (transparency, animation, vector geometry, or wide color). PicEditLab produces APNG output that conforms to the standard specification, so it works the same everywhere — from email clients to design software to modern web browsers.

Which Formats Can Be Converted to APNG

Almost any image format you have on hand can be converted to APNG on PicEditLab. We support 38 source formats including iPhone HEIC, all major camera RAW formats (CR2, NEF, ARW, DNG, RW2, ORF, PEF), AVIF, WebP, TIFF, BMP, PSD, GIF, JPEG XL, JPEG 2000 and more. Pick your specific source format below to land on a page tuned for that exact conversion — with parameters, tips and FAQs specific to that format pair.
